DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS

I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 8. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.

  • The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.
  • For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.
  • To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.
  • *BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.
  • TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.
  • Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.

For my “homeschooled” peeps who were extremely educationally neglected, you can try ixl (sounds like “I excel”)

It’s not free, but it is very cheap, and you can pay only for the course you need help in and only for as long as you need it. As someone who was “““homeschooled”““ i.e. not taught at all past division and had to teach myself, we used this for my baby sister who could barely read at age 15 bcuz she had dyslexia and my parents just decided it was too much effort and pretty much completely abandoned her schooling. In a year of this we were able to catch her up to almost her expected grade level so she could go to school with her peers. HIGHLY recommend.

also "ough life-saving essential medical equipment uses so much plastic" in this country you can purchase an artificial ballsack for your pickup truck

headspace-hotel

"ough watching a show uses so much electricity" on road sides there are giant electrified billboards that do nothing but show you ads

burntout-fagdyke

both statements can be true and bad things, they dont cancel each other out. plus i feel like using a carcinogenic material in medical equipment is a little worse than truck nuts

headspace-hotel

...pretty sure the reason plastic is used in medical equipment is *because* it's the safest cheaply-available material

I don't know very much about chemistry and materials science and the like, so I'm not the best person to set the record straight, but I feel like the plastic conversation has gone off course

Plastic is undeniably a good technological advancement that has greatly improved human lives. It straight up just has characteristics and capabilities that no other material has. Particularly in medicine it's really important to have a material that can be easily sterilized, doesn't break down or corrode when exposed to various fluids and substances, is flexible, doesn't trigger allergies, etc.

The problem is that we're using this miracle material for all sorts of bullshit that could easily be made from something more sustainable

AS A SCIENTIST WHO USES JUST. SO MUCH PLASTIC A DAY. it never feels good but it's also kinda a necessity you can't double dip in expensive chemicals like yeah lemme just reuse old faithful the reusable serological pipette and just agonizingly contaminate my cells that sometimes !! something was sacrificed for!!!! if you can find an affordable and widely available biodegradable material you can put in a fucking autoclave you'll win the Nobel prize yeah research and medicine just straight up BLOW through plastic. I die a bit inside using an entire pipette box in one sitting. but it's for a purpose. truck nuts? plastic grocery bags? mass produced cheap ass products?? absolutely zero purpose

re: that fucking staff post. obviously death to algorithms, but i also wanna interrogate the wider underlying assumptions of their logic there cuz. is 'success' having lots of followers & lots of popular posts??? why is that the end goal of using this website. i don't open tumblr to get attention from strangers, i open tumblr to read funny jokes and interesting commentary and to see cool art. encouraging clout-chasing will only increase user engagement if you successfully get people literally addicted to the associated dopamine hit. what if we didn't have to do that!!! what if a website could be a place you went to on purpose because you had fun there!!!!

Hi OP and assorted seekers of happiness on Tumblr,

One day many months ago someone I followed reblogged a post that had reblogs turned off before I could reblog it. I looked at the OP and it turned out to be a user research survey blog claiming to associate with Staff. I took it and complained about various things, and then a couple weeks later one of the things I complained about got changed. That blog, was https://www.tumblr.com/benevolenthellsite and the two most newest surveys linked were:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2V3MQTP (the longer one)

and

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HS5LP3W (the shorter one)

So if you want Staff to stop punching holes in their own roof, take one of those. Or both, both is good. Anyways, just wanted to give you an option. Thanks for listening!
